Do You Need A Bareback Pad When Riding Your Horse Bareback?

Do you need a Bareback Pad? - In our opinion- YES.

If you are planning to do more than the odd jaunt around the field, we would strongly recommend a bareback pad for both Horse and Rider comfort.

Try sitting on your hands for five minutes and you will have an idea of what your seat bones feel like to your horses back!

What type of pad will depend on how often and long you plan to ride for. If you are an occasional bareback rider, who rides for short periods of time, there are many cheap and adequate pads on the market, but please still look for one with a bit of padding.

But, if you plan to use your pad more regularly, a 'well padded' pad is a much better option.
Horsedream Sheepskin Bareback Pads are made up of three layers - A super-soft sheepskin seat area for the rider to sit in, a quality quilted centre section (like a numnah) and a sheepskin underside against the horses back. These pads also have insert pockets either side of the spine containing composite foam shims/padding (shims can be removed if not required, and when washing) The padding gives extra comfort to the horse, especially if it has high withers, if the rider is of heavier build (remember those seat bones) and if you plan to ride for long distances/time. Enhances the connection between You and your Horse; feel the warmth of your horses' body through the sheepskin along with all of its movements. You will also notice the freedom of movement your horse now has and how relaxed and fluid he feels. These pads are super comfy for the rider too and the lambskin acts as a shock absorber for both horse and rider - very therapeutic :)

These bareback pads are used with a dressage girth (so there are no lumps and nothing to rub against your leg). They have D rings for a breast plate to help secure the pad in place if your horse/pony is a little round! They also have a D ring for stirrup attachment, if required, although I have to say that I am not a fan of stirrups with bareback pads! If you do use stirrups with any bareback pad, please always use good safety stirrups.

Lambskin/sheepskins have a high therapeutic value; they promote circulation, are temperature balancing, shock absorbing and prevent the development of sores. Sheepskin bareback pads are also very easy to care for: Lambskin/sheepskin consist entirely of proteins, and therefore do not provide a breeding ground for bacteria or viruses. Regular shaking and airing will help to neutralise odours and keep the wool fresh, with the added attraction that it is naturally dirt resistant, supple and hardwearing. Usng a special sheepskin brush, dirt, sweat and mud can be easily removed, reducing the need to wash the pad but if you do want to wash the pad, sheepskin products can be machine washed, with a sheepskin detergent, and tumble dried at low temperatures.

The Basic PLUS Bareback pad

Beautifully crafted and anatomicaly shaped, this pad has a lambskin upper for rider to sit on and lambskin underneath against your horses back, with a hard wearing, quilted, cotton twill numnah in between. There are insert pouches either side of the spine for composite foam padding, giving extra comfort to both you and your horse. These pads can be removed when washing or for an even closer contact with your horse. There is a strong loop at the front of pad to aid balance if required and great for carrying the pad. D rings are postioned on the pad for use of a breast plate, crupper and training aids if required. There are also strong metal D rings to attach stirrups if required to aid balance (D rings are attached to the strong webbing material that is sewn into the pad). All the Bareback pads have a foam cantle block (removable when washing) to give support to the rider. Girth straps are made from BioThane (BioThane® coated webbing has proven durability in applications where safety, cleanability, flexibility and strength are critical. It is a trusted brand in national sports leagues to international space and military organizations)

The Premium PLUS Bareback Pad

The Premium PLUS Bareback pad is the same as the Basic PLUS but with the addition of foam padded knee rolls and the ability to take a 'Half Tree' if required (sold seperately). The Half tree allows you to attach stirrups to stirrup bars, You can then use the stirrup to mount and ride as if riding on a conventional saddle.
The padded knee rolls (removable when washing) give a lot of extra support and feeling of security; great if your horse is a bit 'sharp' or 'spooky'. Also aids a good riding position so is great for novice riders. This pad unzips into two halves (the top seat unzips from the lower part of the pad) for washing purposes and to insert the half tree if required.
